Immunosenescence and Vaccine Responses

Immunosenescence, the gradual deterioration of the immune system with age, significantly impacts vaccine efficacy in older adults. As immune responses weaken, the elderly are less likely to develop strong immunity after vaccination. This poses challenges for protecting this vulnerable population from infections. Researchers are exploring ways to enhance vaccine formulations for older adults, such as increasing antigen doses or adding immune-stimulating adjuvants. Targeted vaccines that consider the effects of immunosenescence can improve immunity in aging populations, providing critical protection against pathogens that disproportionately affect them, including influenza and pneumococcal infections.
