HIV Virus

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that attacks the immune system, specifically CD4 cells, which play a crucial role in the body's defense against infections. HIV can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a condition characterized by a weakened immune system, making individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. HIV is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated blood or blood products, and from an infected mother to her child during childbirth or breastfeeding. The virus can also be spread through sharing of needles among intravenous drug users. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has revolutionized the management of HIV, helping control viral replication and allowing individuals with HIV to lead healthy lives. Despite advancements, there is no cure for HIV, making prevention through safe practices, testing, and awareness crucial. Global efforts focus on reducing new HIV infections, increasing access to treatment, and combating stigma associated with the virus. HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns promote education, testing, and destigmatization, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and ongoing research toward a cure.
