Epstein Barr Virus

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a member of the herpesvirus family, and it is widespread globally, infecting a majority of the population. Known for causing infectious mononucleosis, or "mono," EBV is also linked to various other illnesses, including certain cancers, autoimmune diseases, and lymphoproliferative disorders. EBV primarily infects B cells and epithelial cells, establishing a lifelong latent infection. It spreads through saliva, and symptoms of infection can range from mild to severe, with fatigue, fever, and sore throat being common manifestations.  Diagnostic methods include serological tests and molecular techniques to detect viral DNA. While there is no specific cure for EBV, supportive care helps manage symptoms. Understanding EBV's complex interactions with the immune system remains crucial for developing preventive and therapeutic strategies.
