Title : Leveraging power BI to assess community immunization efforts

Abstract:

Vaccine hesitancy has increased as pediatric immunization rates have decreased, with lowest rates for children experiencing social determinants of health. Limitations within data infrastructure and immunization information systems (IIS) for pediatrics create barriers to understanding community immunization rates, specifically data transmission across states and immigrant, refugee, and American Indian/Alaska Native communities. To address these issues, immunization partnership grants were awarded to 23 practices and organizations across the United States to implement community-based vaccine initiatives. Funding prioritized rural, under-resourced, historically hesitant communities, and children under 5.

To evaluate funded initiative effectiveness, grantee data was collected through mid and final-project reports through SurveyMonkey (n=72) from February 2023 - February 2024 on their level of agreement with the following: increased opportunities to 1) improve vaccine confidence, 2) improve vaccination uptake, and 3) support pediatricians in delivering on-time vaccinations. Mixed method evaluation approaches were utilized with data centralized in Power BI to visualize community priorities and programmatic outcomes. Through grantee project activities, 95% reported they were better able to support pediatricians in delivering on-time vaccinations to children and 95% reported improved confidence in vaccines for rural and underserved communities. Overall, 98% of grantees felt there was an improvement in vaccination uptake within their communities with 1,883 pediatric immunizations administered.

Centralizing cross-program data within Power BI increased data accessibility and data sharing with partners, increased knowledge of successful community initiatives, and increased public health capacity. Power BI effectively visualized self-reported vaccine administrative data from participants, and recent literature highlights Power BI as a revolutionary tool for vaccination data analysis. These emerging trends suggest potential for enhancing data-driven public health decisions and improving the effectiveness of immunization programs.

Audience Take Away:

  1. Demonstrate how Power BI can be leveraged to analyze disaggregated data for identifying and addressing health disparities in community-based vaccine initiatives

  2. Illustrate the application of real-time data tracking and visualization techniques using Power BI to enhance decision-making in vaccine program management and outbreak response

  3. Explain how integrating multiple data sources in Power BI can lead to more comprehensive and equitable approaches in vaccine research, development, and public health interventions
